This is a hands-on event. Seeds and seed starting materials will be provided to get you started on your 2024 growing journey. Special guest Florentina Rodriguez will be joining us to speak about her project, Miami Valley Seed Commons, and to share seeds from her seed library.

Structures are important when you want to garden into December or in very early spring. Learn about the various methods and materials that can provide you with fresh produce well beyond the typical growing season with Bob Huston, a life-time gardener. (held at 3990 St. Rte. 370 near John Bryon)

Join long-time gardener Cindy Olsen , to learn best practices forn your vegetable patch and also discuss how to garden in small areas. You will also learn how and when to harvest, how to ensure a good harvest, and what to do to prepare soil for the next year.

Join Sarah Hippensteel from the Miami Valley Water Conservancy District to learn about where our water comes from and how we can help to keep it clean. Understanding how it gets from our rivers to our taps enables us to make good decisions about our water practices. We will tour the Nature Conservancy’s restoration of the newly meandered stream at Agraria.

Soil is essential for life on earth. Faith Morgan and Lynn Sontag, a soil experts, will talk about what we can do to not only protect our soil, but to improve it as we also improve our health, water, and air. Learn what constitutes good soil and how to nurture it on your own property to create healthy harvests.
2023 Educational Series: Trees
Aug. 28: Trees
Explore the forest above and below your feet with Macy Reynolds. She will help you with methods to ID trees and to keep them healthy on your property. You will also learn how trees provide food for insects and birds, serenity, and mitigate effects of climate change. We will tour the new planting of trees by the Nature Conservancy on the re-meandered stream.

Aug. 21: Bees
Join Macy Reynolds as you look for the many species of native bees that you mostly just don’t notice. You will learn the many ways they nest and the flowers they need for necessary pollen and nectar. Bring a hand lens if you have one or a phone to be able to look more closely at the identifying marks. Native bees are responsible for pollinating 1/3 of the food we eat so we need to help them survive.
