"Finding Myself In This Earth"

"Finding Myself In This Earth" a dance choreographed by Dimi Reber, will be performed in an evening of dance/theater pieces by Louise Smith, Tricia Gelmini, Judith Mikita, Valerie Blackwell Truitt, Jill Becker and Katy Gaines, October 16 & 17, 8:00pm at the Antioch College Foundry Theater, 920 Corry St, Yellow Springs. Admission is free to Antioch Students, Staff and Faculty. Dimi Reber, Antioch College Professor Emerita in Dance, was inspired to create "Finding Myself In This Earth" by David Suzuki's "The Sacred Balance" and Wendell Berry's "The Art of the Commonplace".  Segments from these texts accompany the piece in performance along with musical excerpts from Bach's "Magnificat" and Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas". Suzuki and Berry write most eloquently about a perspective in which humans are part of the planet and its atmosphere in the most fundamental way, being made of and dependent on the basic elements of air, water, sun and earth.  They write of the central role of life itself (beginning at the bacterial level in our planet's earliest days and continuing to the present) in creating an environment that sustains life. The piece is being made with the full creative collaboration of the dancers and narrator, many of whom are choreographers and teachers themselves.  Louise Smith will perform a brief solo where she reflects on how reading, writing and memory allow us to be in both the present and the past.  Tricia Gelmini explores how our sense of home is embedded in our memories and lies within us. In her solo "This Is the Place”, .Judith Mikita, from Cincinnati, brings "Working in a Dead Woman's Kitchen and Other Stories", a comic-and-not spoken and danced work with true to life quips of the infirm and not. Valerie Blackwell Truitt's "Expectations" hints at the expectations which are put upon, and sometimes forced upon, women in the form of physical and emotional force or barter. Jill Becker’s "Alone/Together" is an improvised duet by Becker and Katy Gaines. Becker moves alone to an introspective piano solo and is then joined by Gaines for a companionable duet. The program will also be performed at Contemporary Dance Theater on October 24th in Cincinnati. For more information, please contact Dimi Reber at 937-767-1078.
